Oxalic Acid

Oxalic acid is a highly oxidized, strong organic acid that is widely distributed in nature, occurring in both plants and animals. In plants, it generally accumulates as a metabolic end product in the form of free acid. Oxalic acid is becoming as an essential household chemical that can be used, like many other acids, as a cleaner for various things. Oxalic Acid is a white crystalline solid that forms a colorless solution in water. 8-10 ounces of the powder to one gallon of warm water would give the best results for most of applications. At high doses Oxalic acid is very dangerous, but at moderate doses it is safe for various useful functions.

How to use?

For Rust Removing: Oxalic acid can be used as rust remover. Our Oxalic acid will dissolve rust quickly. You will need to wear rubber gloves or appropriate PPE and eye protection and use the acid in a well-ventilated area.

For Tools: Degrease, clean and dry tools. Add one gallon of water to a container large enough to hold your tools. Add three tablespoons of oxalic acid to the water. Mix carefully and be sure not to splash the acid onto yourself or the surrounding work area. Place the rusted tools into the mixture. Allow the tools to soak for 20 minutes. Rinse away the rust and remaining acid in water. Dry thoroughly.

For lightly Rusted: Mix a one tablespoon of oxalic acid and one cup of warm water. Apply the solution with a toothbrush, agitating lightly. If stain persists, let dry and repeat it.

For Heavily Rusted: Mix three parts oxalic acid crystals with one-part warm water to create an oxalic acid paste. The paste is used on wood with dark stains created by water marks or apply the paste to the stained/rusted areas with a paintbrush and allow to dry. Remove the oxalic acid paste with a wet sponge.

Q-1 WHAT IS OXALIC ACID

Oxalic Acid is a naturally occurring acid found in plants. It became popular in Europe & Canada for treating Varroa Mites in a honey bee hive.

Q-2. HOW CAN IT BE USED TO TREAT?

There are three approved methods to treat with Oxalic Acid:

Solution Method:

Note: To completely dissolve Oxalic Acid Dihydrate, use warm syrup.

Dissolve 35g of Oxalic Acid Dihydrate in 1 liter of 1:1 sugar water (weight : volume). Smoke bees down from the top bars. With a syringe or an applicator, trickle 5 ml of this solution directly onto the bees in each occupied bee space in each brood box. The maximum does is 50ml per colony whether bees are in NUCs, single, or multiple brood chambers.

Under certain unfavorable conditions (e.g. weak colonies, unfavorable overwintering conditions), this application method may cause some bee mortality or overwintering bee loss.

Vaporizer Method:

Apply only to outdoor colonies with a restricted lower hive entrance. Seal all upper hive entrances and cracks with tape to avoid escape of Oxalic Acid vapor. Smoke bees up from the bottom board. Place 1g Oxalic Acid Dihydrate powder into vaporizer. Follow the vaporizer manufacturer’s directions for use. Insert the vaporizer apparatus through the bottom entrance. Apply heat until all Oxalic Acid has sublimated.

Spraying Package Method:

Ensure bees are clustered before applying.

Spray broodless package with 1:1 sugar water solution (without Oxalic Acid mixed) at least 2 hours before spraying with Oxalic. This fills their stomachs to reduce ingestion of Oxalic Solution.

Mix 1:1 ratio sugar water with 35 grams of Oxalic Acid (same ratio as Solution Method). For a 2 lb package, use 21mL of solution. For a 3 lb package use 31mL solution.

Store bees in a cool darkened room for 72 hours before hiving

Q-3 HOW EFFECTIVE IS OXALIC ACID?

The effectiveness of Oxalic Acid treatment can be in excess of 95%, but solution method have a higher efficacy.
